We’re on a mission to raise our collective consciousness on matters of human health. We do this by working towards our vision of making medical education accessible, flexible, and age-appropriate for kids.

It all started when Joan created a single activity sheet to facilitate discussion on her health condition. As a mother and final year medical student, Joan struggled for months with a progressively severe eczema. By the time she managed to diagnose her own chemical allergy from information she found on social media, she was convinced there must be a better way to deliver medical education. Instead of returning to medical school, Joan founded MedULingo in 2022. As a linguist, Joan brings a descriptive approach to the task of increasing and improving medical literacy (rather than prescribing specific health behaviors and ways of thinking) She is also the author of the book “Raising Doctors: the Med School Admissions Success Guide for Parents of Future Physicians”.

At MedULingo, we believe that health is for everyone and that health literacy skills, including medical literacy, are foundational when it comes to advocating for own health. Improving health literacy and health equity enables individuals to better access, evaluate, and make sense of information and services needed to promote health outcomes. And while there are no prerequisites to learning many aspects of medicine, there are ample health problems for all of us to try and solve.

As part of our commitment to health equity and strength-based approaches, our logo embraces symbols that are not traditionally associated with the practice of medicine. The pencil crayon in our logo was chosen to represent the needs of families and early learners in the home setting, hence we focus on delivering story books, printables, and other “pencil and paper” resources.
The canary is a symbol for clarity and chemical allergies, as a reminder to always consider the conditions where we live, work, and play, as important factors that affect our health.
