Teach your students family consumer science with an easy-to-play printable healthy shopping game! This is a fun and interactive resource for applying health and medical literacy in day-to-day decision-making.

This game enables learners to:

  1. Recognize ingredients, foods, and products that are healthy,
  2. Recognize  products that are not healthy, and
  3. Identify which items have more ingredients or fewer ingredients.

Consumer choices can substantially affect health and quality of life on a daily basis as well as over the long term. Therefore, instruction on grocery store items is a must-have in any medical literacy curriculum. Consumers, as well as decision makers in industry who develop and market products, need to grapple with questions concerning ingredients.

A basic yet broad and holistic understanding of grocery store items is an important part of health education and improving health literacy to promote health outcomes. Knowledge about ingredients helps people to make informed health decisions. Learn with this fun and interactive card game!

How to use these resources:
Play with 2 to 4 players. Cut out all of the game pieces (52 item cards, 6 character cards, 4 shopping carts). Players may choose a character and a shopping cart. Each player is given five cards and at each turn, they draw a new card and may discard a card. The game ends when all of the cards have been drawn. The player with the least number of ingredients in their hand wins.
 
Students will be introduced to the concepts listed below. These resources may be used with other media as part of a multi-modal educational experience. Instruction may be delivered before, during, or after the learners play the game.
